About our anthropology programme

I'm attending my 3rd semester of the anthoprology degree and personally I consider it good enough at this moment. Because we got a lot of pending stuff to learn yet, like the sooner specialization choose and the future content and habilities we must learn for our professional development. But, at this point, the first three semesters has been challenging and enjoyable, thanks to the interesting and varied things we have seen. For example, and one of the greatest subjects was "Hunters-gatherers" where, in a nutshell, we learnt about the first human generations that lived and spread around Earth, how they subsist, what kind of cultural patterns they had, like the rupestrian art, mummifications, religious habits, nature imitation, valoration of their environment (linguistically and communicatively by symbolisms and social dynamics) and how they were the beggining of the human kind we know and are today.

With this, I think our journey through the anthropology course is challenging, the workload is okay, can´t complain, we have great teachers, interesting and excellent content to learn, but... the practical work is a thing 😪. I mean, our campus, fortunately, has an available space for the archeological practice and laboratories for social and physical anthropology, however we don´t have sufficient practical work. I consider this area of our formation unbalanced with the theorical area... Mostly, we have been involved more with texts and theories than the practical habilities and the trial-error dynamic, being this latter two, elements that are crucial for a humanist and social degree wich is broad related with persons and the environment.

Moving to another aspect, the technology, our campus has multiple spaces for us to sit and do our stuff, libraries at FACSO and another one in Philsophy and Humanities Faculty (idk if there's another one or more inside the campus), there's a lot of computers available in their respective rooms... So we got fortunately the tools and ways to study and focus on our things. But, despite this sounds fantastic, the reality is that the connection to internet is literally the worst, because of the signal💀. Due our actual times, the majority of things we have to do for study the degree, search achademic info, watch documentaries and almost everything, is by devices with wifi, so, if I want to connect my PC or anything, the time of waiting to charge Google Scholar or Ucursos💀 will be an eternity... This happens to me as well as with my personal wifi and the FACSO internet.

However, as I was saying, the practical area is one thing that need changes, principally as investments in disposing more spaces and opportunities to do prospections, excavations, use the tools that are used in archeology, more field trips and ethnographies for example. If such practical instances like the mentioned ones abound, ok thankful, but if is not the case; would be breathtaking practice the archeology specialization outside Santiago City😤.

one pic I take inside FACSO, in 2021 Sept.🗿

  1. I agree that practical work should be more present because it would be very enriching for our training. I hope that you don't have to do your specialization outside Santiago :'(
